ABOUT SHATTER

Shattering The Pictures In Our Heads deconstructs the “Mythic Indian” stereotype through an immersive documentary experience with genuine perspectives from members of the Shoshone-Paiute Tribes of the Duck Valley Indian Reservation. This multi-screen art installation combines 360 ÌŠ and traditional video formats to create a three-dimensional environment where visitors find themselves steeped in the sights, sounds, and powerful stories from the Sho-Pai Tribes in Northeastern Nevada & Idaho.

Our team would like this project to become an evolving art platform for authentic conversations about the ramifications of positive and negative Indigenous portrayals in the media. We invite you to discover these firsthand Native stories of joy, resilience, identity, and community next year at UMOCA from January to April 2022.

The artists behind this multimedia project are students and teachers from the Deep West Filmmaking  Mentorship Program by Edge of Discovery since 2014. In six years, the mentorship has produced over 40 short films with students from the Owyhee Combined School to capture the language,  history, and culture of the Sho-Pai Tribes. All the films premiered annually at the National Cowboy  Poetry Gathering and continue to reach a broad audience and gain recognition.

RE-INDIGENIZING MEDIA IN THE MOUNTAIN WEST

Our team will showcase a brand new section of online interviews between young members of the Duck Valley Reservation and Native American activists and artists living in Utah. The panelists will touch on mental health, protection of natural resources, educational challenges, and Indigenous representation in their local communities. Also, it will combine 360 ÌŠ and traditional video formats to showcase locations connected to the panelists' sense of belonging.

A FEW THOUGHTS FROM OUR TEAM

LANCE OWYHEE

Owyhee, NV
Intern Director | Script Consultant | Narrator

“I wanted to be part of this project because it’s very close to my heart and takes an interest in what I’m into. Being able to amplify our voices and have people listen to what we have to say is pretty cool. I’m glad that I actually did it."

DESTINY MAX

Owyhee, NV

Intern Director | Script Consultant | Narrator

“This project helped me step up from my comfort zone in many ways. It gave me a voice when I was shy. In a way, I have now flourished. I think it’s important for younger Natives to see that even a small-town Native can do big things.”

COLENE PARADISE

Owyhee, NV
Producer | Script Consultant | 2019 Nevada Humanities Award, Excellence in Teaching

“Young people can do some really good work. Many adults go through life thinking they can’t do anything...but they can. I really like how the kids portrayed our community, our scenery, and the beauty. It was totally an amazing time.”
